Coverage and network in mainland China.

Our China eSIM provides coverage across all major Chinese cities. They include Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and Guilin, as well as regional centres.

The Cedar China plan covers mainland China only. So, if you're planning to travel from Australia and visiting Hong Kong and Macau, consider choosing our Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau eSIM option. Alternatively, you may prefer to use a separate Hong Kong eSIM and Macau eSIM.

China eSIM plans and how much data you need

We recommend choosing your data allowance according to your intended usage. As a guide, consider:

  • 3GB: Light Usage - Google Maps, messaging and light browsing.
  • 5GB: Regular Usage - Browsing and social media checking
  • 10GB: Medium Usage - Frequent browsing, social media and photo sharing
  • 20GB: Heavy Usage - Browsing, social media, video calls and hotspots

Our post on how much data do I need can provide you with more guidance.

How to set up your China eSIM

We recommend installing and activating the eSIM before flying from Australia. That way, you can enjoy an immediate internet connection when you land. Doing so will enable you to access websites and app stores that may otherwise be harder to reach.

Here’s how easy it is to set up your China eSIM.

  1. Check that your handset is unlocked and confirm your phone is compatible with an eSIM.
  2. Buy the China eSIM plan that best suits your trip.
  3. Before Departure: Install the eSIM with a strong home Wi-Fi using the Link/QR code
  4. After Arrival: Select the Cedar eSIM and enable data roaming on it

Read our guide on how do I activate my eSIM for more detailed instructions.

eSIM vs roaming in China

If you want to keep your existing SIM and phone number while visiting China, mobile operators will typically charge daily roaming fees that can add up quickly. Especially if you are staying for a couple of weeks or longer. Your carrier may also impose data restrictions or reduce speeds once you reach your limit.

Using a travel eSIM data plan gives you peace of mind because you know exactly how much data you have and what you'll pay upfront. You can also set up your eSIM before you leave Australia without removing your physical SIM card.

Our post on why Cedar Mobile, dare to compare will help you to further evaluate the options.

Adding Japan or Korea to the same trip

Our China, Japan and Korea eSIM is perfect for those who want to visit other countries in the region. But if you are planning a more extensive Asia trip, then check out our Asia 20 countries eSIM. It covers many more destinations using one eSIM package.

If you are travelling from Australia and visiting China, Cedar Mobile's eSIM offers high-speed data on local networks.

Yes, but we suggest you buy and install it over a strong Wi-Fi before you leave. This gives you time to check that your phone is unlocked and is eSIM compatible.

The China plan covers mainland China only. If needed, we have a combined Mainland China, Hong Kong & Macau eSIM plan.

If you have a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep your home SIM active for your regular phone number and use the China eSIM for mobile data. However, most  mobile providers charge roaming fees for calls and SMS.

Since this is a data-only plan, you can use accessible VOIP calling and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Viper and iMessage to make calls and sms.
