How do I activate my eSIM with a QR code?

Ah, the magic QR code - your golden ticket to glorious mobile data!

Once you buy a Cedar Mobile eSIM plan, you’ll get an email with your QR code (usually within a minute or two - faster than you can say “expensive roaming charges!”). Can’t find it? Poke around in your spam or junk folder just in case.

Just double-check before you start activating the QR code that your phone:

  1. Isn’t locked and is eSIM compatible,
  2. Your VPN and firewall are turned off, and
  3. Your phone has the latest software downloaded on it - iOS or Android ... old phone software will cause you problems activating your QR code (just warning you in advance).
  4. Make sure you have a strong and stable internet/Wi-Fi connection.

Tip: You should activate your eSIM before your trip (highly recommended!).

Global and some Regional Plans typically take longer to activate (it's handshaking and getting all those countries mobile network providers ready for you). We recommend you remove your screen auto-lock before you start the activation to be on the safe side.

For iPhone:

Important do not interrupt the activation steps.

There are three ways to scan your QR code:

  1. Super fast & uncomplicated way: Tap and hold the QR code and hit Add eSIM (works on most iOS 17.4+ iPhones – from March 2024 onwards)
  2. Super fast & uncomplicated way: tap iOS Install Link (works on most iOS 11 or later iPhones - June 2017 onwards)
  3. Or just use your Camera app to scan it!

Then:

  1. When Activate New eSIM? pops up, tap Allow.
  2. Tap Continue when it asks again. Yes, again.
  3. You’ll now see a screen that says Activating ... just give it a minute or two. Do not panic or interfere with the activation process.
  4. Tap Done, when you see Mobile Plan Setup or Activate eSIM.
  5. Next up you will see: Mobile Plan Labels - go ahead and tap Business, or Secondary or perhaps Travel. Tap Continue.
  6. Hit Custom Label and name it something like "Cedar Mobile" (helps to have different name).
  7. Tap Done.
  8. Default Line will now appear, choose Primary, and then Continue.
  9. For iMessage & FaceTime, also pick Primary - yes, (if you use them) and then Continue.
  10. Under Mobile Data, your shiny new Cedar Mobile eSIM will be listed.
  11. When asked about Mobile Data Switching - resist the urge! Leave it OFF, then tap Done.
  12. Your phone may still be doing a little behind-the-scenes setup, so give it a few minutes to fully connect.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you interrupt the installation and activation steps, it will default into a slower activation process behind the scenes. Don't worry, just go to Troubleshooting - I interrupted the eSIM activation process ... now what?

For Android:

  1. Go to Settings, then Connections.
  2. Go to SIM Manager.
  3. Under eSIMs, tap + Add eSIM.
  4. Scan QR Code, from QR email.
  5. Wait a few seconds, then you'll see Add eSIM, tap Add.
  6. Label your new eSIM - you can now have the option to rename your new eSIM. Select option that says Name, eg. something like Cedar Mobile.

For Google Pixel:

  1. Screenshot your QR code in the Cedar Mobile email.
  2. Go to Settings then Network and Internet then SIMs then Add SIM
  3. Select Set up an eSIM and camera screen opens
  4. Either scan the QR code or tap Scan from photo (if you took a screenshot earlier) and follow the screen prompts (accept the defaults - easy!)
  5. Go to Settings and turn both your new eSIM and Data Roaming ON
  6. Make sure both your Primary (Home) SIM and Data Roaming is OFF, unless you like surprise roaming bills when you get back.

What's an eSIM?

Say goodbye to fiddly little plastic SIM cards! An eSIM (that’s short for embedded SIM) is a new digital technology version that lives right inside your phone or device. No more old fashioned SIMs and finding a paperclip - it’s all done electronically! Just as clever, but way more convenient.

How much data do I really need?

Ah, the million-megabyte question! How much data you need totally depends on how you use your phone – are you a map-checking, music-loving, TikTok-scrolling, Netflix-bingeing travel adventurer, or more of an “email and chill” kind of explorer? Let’s break it down so you’re never caught off-guard abroad.

First things first: what’s a GB?

Think of it like this - 1 GB (Gigabytes) = 1000 MB (Megabytes), and every app you use is nibbling (or chomping!) away at it. Here's a fun little cheat sheet to help you out:

Quick guide to help you along:

3 GB for 7+ days
Perfect for: quick check-in, light browsing, and saying "hi" to mum on WhatsApp.

Lasts: around 7-10 days if you keep it low key ... even more if it’s just emails.

5 GB for 15+ days
Do everything in Small, plus sprinkle in some tunes, Insta-stories, and Google Maps magic.

You’re looking at ~2-3 weeks of good vibes.

10 GB for up to 30 days
All of Medium’s perks, but double the freedom - more social media, more music, and map hopping.

Should keep you sorted for ~3-4 weeks.

20 GB for up to 30 days
You’re living the digital nomad life: Google Meets, video shares, your favorite TV series episode (you just had to know!), TikTok marathons and so much more.

Still good for ~3-4 weeks

Bonus tip: Need more? No panic! Cedar Mobile lets you top up at the same price as buying a new eSIM. No hidden nasties.

Let’s do a deep drive - What uses what?

Google Maps: ~ 60 MB/hour
Pro tip: download your route via hotel Wi-Fi and save your data for more important things. Like memes.

Email: ~20-30 MB/hour for basics.
Add attachments and photos ... and boom it climbs up fast.

Internet Browsing: ~50 MB/hour
Not bad, but try not getting carried away all day.

Messaging (WhatsApp, etc.): ~50 MB/hour
If you attach Pics and videos? They’ll munch even more.

Music Streaming:

  • Standard: ~50 MB/hour
  • High Quality: ~150 MB/hour

Best to download your playlist at home and jam offline like a pro.

Video Calls (Zoom, Google Meet): ~300 MB+/hour
Save these for your hotel Wi-Fi unless you really need to see your cat in real time.

Speed Tests: up to 600 MB/test Depending on which speed test you use, you can chew up a lot of data.

YouTube:

  • SD: ~500 MB/hour
  • HD: ~3-4 GB/hour
  • 4K: ~15-20 GB/hour ... wow!!

Download first on your Wi-Fi, watch later - your data will thank you.

Social Media:

  • TikTok: ~1 GB/hour
  • Snapchat: ~700 MB/hour
  • Instagram: ~600 MB/hour
  • Facebook: ~500 MB/hour
  • Twitter (X): ~400 MB/hour

It adds up really fast!

Netflix:

  • SD Movie (2 hours): ~2 GB
  • HD: ~1 GB+ for 15-20 mins
  • 4K/UHD: ~7 GB+/hour (ouch!)

Download before leave home - watch your favorite movies/series later on the go

In short: plan your data like you plan your outfits - a little thought goes a long way. Happy scrolling, snapping and streaming, wherever you go!

How do I know if my phone is unlocked? (and what on earth is a locked phone?)

Great question! Before you jet off on your next adventure - or snap up that shiny new digital SIM - it’s a good idea to check whether your phone is locked. Don’t worry, it’s super easy, and we’ll walk you through it.

How to check if your phone is locked (aka the detective work):

iPhone users - here’s your sleuthing guide:

  1. Head to Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Go into About
  4. Scroll down to Carrier Lock or Service Provider Lock
    - If it says SIM Locked ... yep, your phone’s still locked.
    - If it says No SIM restrictions - woohoo! You’re unlocked and ready to travel

Android users - your turn!

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Connections
  3. Go to Mobile Networks
  4. Tap Mobile Operators
  5. Turn off Select automatically to see what pops up
    - If you only see your usual Home provider, sorry, you’re still locked.

Bonus option: Just ask!

Still unsure? Call your mobile network operator and ask them if your phone is locked. They are the only ones that unlock the phone for you ... so be nice when you chat with them.

So, what’s the difference between Installation and Activation?

Great question, globetrotter!

When you're setting up your Cedar Mobile eSIM, your phone will give you a little nudge to activate it. But let’s break it down:

Installation means downloading your eSIM onto your phone - think of it as moving in. Whether it’s automatic or manual, it’s just your phone getting cozy with your new Cedar Mobile eSIM.

Activation? Well, this is a two-step party:

  1. First, your phone activates the eSIM itself - this gets everything set up and ready to roll.
  2. Then, when you land in your destination, boom! It activates again - this time, our Cedar Mobile data plan connects to the local mobile network and goes live.

Pro tip:
You’ll need internet and a phone that’s eSIM compatible and unlocked. So, do yourself a favor and get all this sorted before you jet off. That way, your phone is ready to say “Bonjour” the moment you land!

Remember: your data plan only kicks in when you're actually on the ground in your destination country. Until then, it's just chillin’ and waiting patiently.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Oh, the age-old question! Don’t worry, but you do need to:

Just double-check that your phone isn’t locked and is eSIM compatible, your VPN and firewall are turned off and your phone has the latest software downloaded on it - no surprises at the airport, please!

You've got 2 options:

1.Before you jet off

This is the best and smoothest way to go. We recommend installing and activating your eSIM the day before you fly out. That way, you’re ready to hit the ground running (or strolling, if you prefer).

2. When you arrive

Decided to leave it to last? (always the optimist). You can activate your eSIM once you land. Just make sure you’ve got Wi-Fi handy - your eSIM needs a little internet love to wake up. And trust us, you don’t want to discover your phone isn’t compatible or locked when you’re tired, jet-lagged, and Wi-Fi-hunting in a foreign country.

Want the step-by-step juicy details? Check out the next question: How to activate your eSIM QR code

I’ve landed - Now what?!

Welcome to your destination! Ready to hit the ground running (or at least get some solid Wi-Fi)? Let’s make sure your phone’s all set so you’re connected and avoiding those nasty and expensive roaming charges. Whether you prepped like a pro or you’re doing it last-minute (no judgment), we’ve got you covered:

A) If you got it all sorted before you took off

Nice one, planner! Here’s your quick checklist after landing:

  1. Airplane mode off!  (Yep, you can rejoin the digital world now.)
  2. Say bye-bye to your VPN or firewalls. We need your phone to connect freely.
  3. Primary SIM: Turn OFF and head to settings and flip Data Roaming OFF.
  4. Now scoot back to Mobile Service (or Cellular)
  5. Tap on your shiny new digital eSIM and toggle This Line ON
  6. Then flip Data Roaming ON for the eSIM. (This is the one doing the heavy lifting now!)
  7. Check you're in a good mobile coverage area
  8. Your eSIM should now be working its magic

B) If you’re installing and activating your eSIM for the first time - Now that you’ve landed in your destination

No worries, better late than never! Here's what to do:

  1. Make sure your phone is unlocked (locked phones = no fun)
  2. Confirm it supports eSIMs - otherwise, this party won’t get started.
  3. Turn off Airplane Mode (You're on the ground - let’s act like it!)
  4. Disable any VPNs or firewalls - they’re just getting in the way.
  5. Make sure your phone has the latest software downloaded (iOS or Android) … it makes a difference, to get you the QR code
  6. Go to your Primary SIM, turn Data Roaming OFF and then Turn Off This Line. Yup, we're benching it for now.
  7. Make sure your Cedar Mobile eSIM has Data Roaming ON.
  8. You’ll need some internet to activate your eSIM - grab some airport or hotel Wi-Fi.
  9. Wait for a decent mobile signal - the stronger, the better!
  10. Your eSIM should now be online and ready to rock

There you go - you're connected, in control, and ready to explore without the dreaded roaming shock. Happy travels!

How do I manually set up my Cedar Mobile eSIM?

No QR code? No worries! You can totally go old-school and enter your eSIM details manually.

  2. Next go to Cellular or Mobile Service
  3. Tap Add eSIM, Next go Use QR Code, then Enter Details Manually
  4. Copy/paste the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your Cedar Mobile email (toggle back and forth if needed - it's worth the hustle!)

  6. Tap Next, next go to Continue, then Done
  7. Toggle iMessage and FaceTime ON when prompted
  8. Boom! You're in business.

Android:

  1. Go to Settings, next go to Connections, then SIM Manager
  2. Tap Add eSIM, next go to Scan QR, then Enter Activation Code

How fast can you get your eSIM?

Once you've picked the perfect data package for your adventure and hit that sweet “pay now” button, sit tight - because typically in just 1-2 minutes, your inbox will get a double surprise:

i) First up: your Order Confirmation (proof you're officially a globetrotter!)

ii) Then: your magical QR code, aka your golden ticket to eSIM activation

Psst ... Don’t forget to peek in your spam or junk folder just in case your emails decide to go on their own little adventure.

Now here’s a hot tip from your travel tech fairy godparent: download and install your shiny new digital eSIM before you jet off. That way, when you land and your phone greets the local mobile network, your Cedar Mobile data plan will be ready to roll instantly - no drama.

And the best part? Your eSIM plan’s validity timer only starts ticking once you connect at your destination. So relax, you're not losing a single minute of data magic while you're still packing your bags.

How many ways can I activate my eSIM?

Just two - simple and sweet!

  1. Scan a QR code (aka the easy-peasy way)

2.     Do it manually (for the control freaks among us)

Q. Do I need the internet to install and activate my eSIM?

You betcha! To get your eSIM up and running, you’ll need a bit of internet magic - either hop onto Wi-Fi or make sure your Primary (Home) SIM is switched on and using its mobile data. No internet, no party!

How do I check when my eSIM expires?

Great question!  Here’s the lowdown:

If you haven’t activated your eSIM yet, it’s= like a digital time capsule - it’ll stay valid for 180 days from the date you bought it.

Once you do activate and it locks into
the mobile network provider in your travel destination, the countdown begins!
Your eSIM will expire either when you’ve used up all your data or when your data plan hits its expiry date- whichever comes first.

But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! We’ll pop an email into your inbox with handy updates when your data’s getting low - at 50%, 20%, and 10%, plus a friendly reminder when you’ve got just 1 day left on your plan.

If you want to do a quick manual check, go back to the QR code email we sent you and click for your data usage - very easy

How can I save data on my eSIM?

We get it - you love your TikTok, Instagram uploads, and 4K movie marathons. But be warned: that kind of digital warrior can gobble up your data faster than you can say “digital warrior!” Pro tip: Save your binge-worthy content before you head out or hop on that hotel Wi-Fi like it’s a lifeboat.

Next up, be besties with Low Data Mode (on iPhone) or Data Saver (on Android and Google Pixel). It’s like a quiet little bodyguard that stops sneaky background apps and updates from partying on your data plan. And super nice, it won’t slow your speed.

Heads-up: Running internet speed tests might seem innocent, but they can munch through 300 - 600 MB of data each. Yikes!

Want the full scoop on how to get savvy with your savings? Check out the above FAQ: How much data do I really need?

Oops! Need a refund? We’ve got you covered!

We totally get it - things don’t always go to plan. That’s why every Cedar Mobile eSIM data plan comes with a 100% Money Back Guarantee!

You’re eligible for a full refund if:

  • Your eSIM just won’t install or activate (ugh, tech issues), or
  • Your travel plans change before you activated your eSIM (shame), or
  • You found out your phone is locked or incompatible with eSIMs (sorry)

Just a heads up: refunds go right back to your original payment method and you'll need to send in your request within 30 days of buying.

Need step-by-step help? We’ve got the details all laid out for you. See: Troubleshooting - Want a refund?

Why doesn’t Cedar Mobile offer unlimited data plans?

Ah, the mythical “Unlimited” data plan. Sounds dreamy, right? But here’s the facts: they’re not truly unlimited high speed data.

They give you a chunk of high speed data, then slam the brakes with glacially slow speeds - usually when you’re in the middle of something really important.

At Cedar Mobile, we call that misleading - instead we give you no gimmicks, no restrictions, no speed reductions or caps, no “fair usage polices”, no fuzzy fine print. Just honest, value-packed high speed data plans that let you know exactly what you’re getting, including Wi-Fi hotspots. We’re all about being Pleasingly Different - Simple. Fair. And full of care.

How can I pay for my new eSIM?

We like to keep things simple and easy! At Cedar Mobile, we happily accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express - and if you're feeling fancy, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal will do the trick too. All transactions are settled in US dollars (USD).

Does my eSIM come with a new phone number?

Nope, no new digits here! (but you still keep your home number). Your shiny new Cedar Mobile eSIM is all about data, darling. But don’t worry - you can still call and chat away using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and all your other VOIP faves.

Can I use my physical SIM card and eSIM together?

Oh yes, you can use both, but only one gets to be the data boss at a time. When you’re off adventuring, switch your eSIM to handle the data stuff and give your wallet a break from those expensive roaming fees.

Pro tip: give your eSIM an easy-to-spot name like “Cedar Mobile” so you don’t mix them up!

Should I switch on “Data Roaming” when I use my eSIM?

Absolutely - but here’s the trick: turn Data Roaming ON for your Cedar Mobile eSIM, and make sure your Primary (Home) SIM and Data Roaming are both turned OFF that way, you’re surfing the web without accidentally racking up scary roaming charges. Clever you!

Can I use more than one eSIM when travelling overseas?

You sure can - iPhones can store up to 10 eSIMs, while most Android and Pixel phones handle up to 10 too. Usually, you can have two active at once - either two eSIMs or one eSIM and one physical SIM. Label them clearly, e.g., "Cedar Mobile - Spain", so you know who’s who in your SIM squad!

Can I reinstall an eSIM after deleting it from my phone?

Oops! Accidentally deleted your eSIM? No worries! You can reinstall it on the same phone using the same QR code.

But heads up - once it’s been activated, that QR code is locked to your device like a loyal puppy. Definitely no hopping the eSIM to a different phone.

Can multiple phones scan the same QR code?

We see you trying to share the magic! But no - once that QR code gets cozy with your phone, it’s in a committed relationship. It's tied to your device's unique ID, so one phone only, please!

Does my Cedar Mobile eSIM support Wi-Fi hotspots/tethering?

For sure, it does! Share that data love - all Cedar Mobile eSIMs are totally Wi-Fi hotspot friendly.

No sneaky fine print, no “fair usage” limits, no daily caps, no restrictions, no speed slowdowns. Just full high speed data joy shared however you like. You’re welcome.

How do I recharge or top up my Cedar Mobile eSIM?

Topping up is a breeze! During your data plan’s validity period, we’ll send you handy email updates when you hit 50%, 20%, 10% - and one final nudge when you’ve got just a day left.

Every time, you’ll get a one-click link to add more data if you want - either the same amount or a different plan if you're feeling fancy.

But if your plan has expired, sorry - it’s time to grab a shiny new digital Cedar Mobile eSIM. But just remember the price of recharge or a new eSIM is just the same ... just at our everyday budget friendly rates.

How do I check how much data I’ve used and what’s left?

Keeping tabs on your data is as easy as pie! Just click the link in your Cedar Mobile eSIM QR code email - it’ll whisk you straight to your data plan dashboard. There, you’ll find a magical little button called Check Usage. Give it a tap, and boom - you'll see exactly what’s left in your data bank.

But wait, there’s more! We’ll send you friendly reminders when you hit 50%, 20%, 10%, and when you’re down to your last day. Think of them as your data fairy godmothers. Just remember, the updates are not live and can be fashionably late - up to 2 hours behind real-time.

If you want super-accurate data stats? Here are three solid DIY tricks:

iPhone:

  • Tap into Settings,
  • Next go to Cellular or Mobile Data
  • Scroll down to see your Cedar Mobile plan usage, called Current Period
  • This will list your Cedar Mobile usage to date and which apps are gobbling up your data e.g. YouTube, Weather, Uber, etc.

Android:

  • Head to Settings
  • Next go Network & Internet,
  • Next - Data Usage or Mobile Network
  • You’ll find your Cedar Mobile data plan usage and app-by-app breakdown (WhatsApp, Google Maps, YouTube, etc.)

Google Pixel:

  • Head to Settings
  • Next go Network & Internet,
  • Next - SIMs
  • Select Carrier for your SIM card
  • Tap App data usage
  • You’ll find your Cedar Mobile data plan usage and tap Android OS to see app-by-app breakdown (WhatsApp, Google Maps, YouTube, etc.)

If I recharge/top up my existing data plan, does the leftover data get a new lease on life too?

You bet it does!

Let’s say you’ve got 1 GB and 2 days left on your current 30 day plan, and you treat yourself to a shiny new 5 GB / 30 day top-up. Boom - you now have 6 GB of data that’s good for 32 days! It’s like your data just booked itself a little vacation extension.

Can I transfer my data to someone else?

“Can I share the love?” question. The answer is a cheeky Yes ... and also No.

Yes, you can pass your QR code to someone else - but only if you haven’t already activated it on your device. It’s like giving someone an unopened gift.

No, you can’t transfer the actual data from your eSIM once it's activated. It’s yours and yours alone.

BUT (and it’s a good but) ... you can share your internet using your phone’s Personal Hotspot. So you can still be a data hero to your friends and family by letting them ride your digital wave.

Uh-oh! My eSIM expired and I forgot to top up. What now?

No stress. Once an eSIM has expired, it’s officially kicked the bucket - but you can easily grab a shiny new one! Good news: the price is exactly the same whether you’re topping up or starting fresh. So just hop on over and order a new eSIM.

Can I still receive calls and texts on my home Primary SIM?

Once you turn off both your Primary SIM and Roaming Data, you will not be receiving calls and texts, or be able to call home on your old number ... but you are saving heaps on those expensive roaming fees and definitely no bill shock when you get home.

If you really, really, really want to, you can turn your Primary SIM back ON to receive calls and texts from home - just remember to keep Data Roaming OFF, unless you’re cool with paying for those expensive roaming fees.

BUT just remember, and it’s an important remember:

i) Some mobile network providers charge you for receiving calls and texts even when you overseas ... so best to check before you depart, just in case yours does!!

ii) Otherwise, guaranteed you’ll get a call at 2.30am in the morning from one of your family and friends back home who forgot you’re overseas ... or your dry cleaner back home is just letting you know your stuff is ready to be picked up!

iii) But the good news is that you will receive those OTP texts some banks send to confirm credit card payments. Phew!

Does Cedar Mobile spy on me?

Nope! Nada. Not our Pleasing Different style.

Cedar Mobile does not track your location or internet activity. We only log the basics (because the law says we must): such as - when you’re connected, how much data you’re munched through, and which mobile network you were on to maintain service quality.

What’s an ICCID number and where can I find it?

Ah, the mighty ICCID! It stands for Integrated Circuit Card Identifier - fancy, right? It’s a special 19 to 20-digit serial number that’s basically your SIM card’s secret handshake. Every SIM has one, and they all kick off with the numbers 89 (because they like to make an entrance).

Need help from us? We'll probably ask you for this magic number - so keep it handy. You’ll find it on the Cedar Mobile email with your QR code.

Most of the Cedar Mobile data plans are valid for 30 days, why is that?

We believe in giving you the best value in terms of convenience and flexibility. Travel plans change, flights get missed or delayed (sorry), holidays get extended (hooray) ... that’s why most of our data plans give you a full 30 days of wiggle room - just a little extra peace of mind so you can roam free without watching the clock.

Is using a Cedar Mobile eSIM a better option for international travel than roaming with my home physical SIM or purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival?

Let’s be real - buying a Cedar Mobile eSIM is hands-down the smarter choice when it comes to flexibility and saving big on those outrageous roaming charges during your travels. Why pay more to use your home SIM overseas when there’s a better way?

If you’re planning to settle into one country for a longer stay (say, three months or more) and need a local number, then a local SIM might make sense. But if you’re hopping between countries, you’ll probably face the hassle of juggling multiple SIM cards, paying separate activation fees, showing ID at every stop, and constantly swapping them out.

That’s why Cedar Mobile is a pleasingly different alternative. With us, you get budget-friendly pricing, no-nonsense high-speed data, and a super simple setup—no strings, no surprises, just travel-friendly internet that works.

How fast is my Cedar Mobile high speed data plan?

At Cedar Mobile, we don't believe in slowing you down. All our data plans come with zero speed restrictions, no sneaky "fair usage" limits and absolutely no throttling (nasty). Just pure high-speed goodness, every time.

Whether you're streaming, scrolling, or navigating your way through a new city, our plans are built to keep you connected without the drama. Most of our plans are 5G-ready too! Just search your destination and check the Technical Specs for what speed to expect.
